Heritage Volunteering

We have an active and enthusiastic Team of Heritage Volunteers performing a number of roles at a variety of local heritage sites. Please get in touch if you'd like to know more about any of our projects.

Guildford Cathedral

We currently have volunteers working on a long-term textile conservation project at Guildford Cathedral. Along with Members from other West and East Surrey Art Societies, we are working on the conservation and repair of the Cathedral 's vestments and hangings, many of which substantially pre-date the Cathedral, having been gifted by local churches when the Cathedral was built.

Sidney Sime Gallery, Worplesdon

We also have volunteers at the Sidney Sime Gallery – more are needed here to help with; stewarding on open days, archiving and researching for an exhibition of the Artist's work at the Lightbox, Woking in 2017.

We recently succesfully applied for an Arts Society Grant to restore a badly damaged oil painting- the conservation work is now complete and the work is back in the Gallery- looking fresh and fabulous! Another Art Society Guildford funded project completed - Sime's Anatomy sketchbook has been restored by MA Paper Conservation students at West Dean College, Chichester.  The Arts Society Guildford has also helped with the restoration and conservation of some of Sime's Bogey Beasts drawings and one of his sketchbooks. The work was carried out by Camberwell Art College students Victoria Haddock and Rebecca D'Ambrosia as part of their MA Conservation work.

Shere Museum

In 2015 we started a project to repack the museums fantastic collection of textiles and garments associated with the village. All will be packaged in archival, acid-free tissue, labelled and stored in new storage boxes.

The Lightbox, Woking

Heritage Volunteers from Guildford and Camberley Art Societies have now completed a project at the Lightbox Gallery. The Team recorded and archived the Gallery's museum collection - diverse items such as; records, photographs materials from local businesses no longer in existence, Robinson's Department Store and the James Walker factory - "The Lion Works" ; artefacts from Brookwood Asylum, and a wonderful collection of antique clothing donated by a Woking resident.

Watts Gallery and the National Trust

A number of Members regularly volunteer at Watts Gallery and several local National Trust properties .
